East Barnet car park charges scrapped
Plans to charge users of an East Barnet car park have been scrapped after a lengthy campaign by thousands of people who said the move would “kill off” the village high street.
Traders were left “gobsmacked” this afternoon after Barnet Council dropped its proposals to introduce payments in the Church Hill Road car park.
The news comes after a vociferous campaign by shopkeepers, residents and the ward’s three councillors, which culminated in a 5,000 name petition opposing the charges.
Campaign organiser Rob Pugh said: “I’m absolutely gobsmacked. We need to pop the champagne corks. I feel like getting a marquee and throwing a party.
